Sex Crimes Against Children Can Occur Anywhere

A 57-year-old former basketball assistant coach, who was awaiting sentencing after being found guilty recently of lewd and lascivious conduct involving a child in 2016, was arrested again on similar charges involving a child under the age of 14.

The 2016 incident allegedly occurred at a team event and involved the inappropriate touching of a 10-year-old girl, a young friend of one of his family members.

Investigators believe there may be additional victims and are encouraging anyone with information to call the Sheriff's Department. Cassie Dickman "North Highlands coach arrested for child sexual assault while awaiting sentencing" www.sacbee.com (Jan. 07, 2019).

How can safe adults help protect minors who participate in youth sporting and other group events away from work and home? Focus on boundary violations by adults as in the following examples:

  • Watch for an adult who won't let a child set limits and teases or belittles a child who tries to set them.
  • Does the adult insist on hugging, touching, tickling, kissing, or wrestling with a child, whether the child seems to want this or not?
  • Does the adult frequently walk into the bathroom with a child?
  • Does the adult share personal conversations with a child that are inappropriately personal, emotional, or that pertain to adult activities?
  • Is the adult overly interested in the child's developing body or a teen's dating life?
  • Does the adult insist on spending uninterrupted time alone with the child?
  • Is the adult always ready to volunteer to provide child care, rides, or to take a child alone on an outing?
  • Does the adult consistently fail to correct the child or enforce the behavior rules other children must follow?
